UN Number and Proper Shipping Name

  1. Each entry in the Dangerous Goods List uniquely identified by two pieces of information:
    • The four-digit UN Number
    • The corresponding Proper Shipping Name (PSN)
  2. It defines a substance/article
    • either directly (e.g. UN 1090 Acetone)
    • or via a collective entry, grouped according to:
      • chemical group (e.g. UN 1987 Alcohols, n.o.s.

      • purpose (e.g. UN 1263 Paint)
      • hazard (e.g. UN 2810 Toxic organic liquid, n.o.s.)

  3. Every UN Number has one or more hazards assigned to it (e.g. UN 2438: toxic, flammable liquid, corrosive). These hazards correspond to the respective Dangerous Goods classes.
